Trail running will certainly require you to side step obstacles unlike straight-ahead road and track running. Therefore, the side to side movements will bring on core-stabilizing muscles in more complex ways. It will touch upon muscles that your body normally is not use to activating.
2.) GAIN SPEED
By running a trail, chances are you will encounter hills; a lot of them. By running up hill, this will force you to use the same muscles you would on flat surfaces, but because of increased resistance, it will build greater strength. You also will be on the balls of your feet, which means your push power will come from your calf muscles making them grow.

The muscles on your lower leg around the shin, called Tibialis, are difficult to train. When one trail runs, it exposes them and places these muscles into action. They have to make sure that you land each step with a level foot strike. Also by running on uneven surfaces, you’ll have to take quicker strides which require less energy.
